Numerous studies have shown that people that spend the most time outdoors,
connecting with nature, or working outdoors are among the healthiest of people.
There is something outside that ignites the human body and mind into a more optimal
health–state. But what is it?
When we are indoors, everything remains static – the sights, sounds, smells and
physical surroundings all remain the same – in other words everything is stagnant. When you are outdoors everything is constantly changing. Walking in nature provides
constant visual stimulation, different sights, sounds, smells and experiences.
The colors of natures are also the most calming to the human brain – green grass and
trees, blue sky, the yellow sun, greenish–blue water etc. Our brain, and specific parts of
the brain, actually “ReWire” to become less reactive, and less prone to the effects of
Stress.
CHALLENGE
Get outside every single day this week for at least 20 minutes. Rain, wind, snow, darkness – don’t let anything stop you. A morning or daytime walk in the sunlight is very therapeutic, but evening walks are great as well.
You might do this at recess at school, during a coffee break at work, or when you get home from your day. Make it a habit every single day to get outside and get your steps in. Everyone should aim for between 8000–14000 steps per day, everyday. Most
phones track this now.
