In today’s world of technology, high workload, lengthy commutes, wars, and controversial issues in the news every day, the brain is overloaded with information and stimulation. Every single day we set a record for information recorded somewhere online. Never has the entire knowledge base of humankind been at our fingertips.
The best mental rest is to unplug, disconnect and do something you love (besides video games or TikTok). You can exercise, meditate, run, hike, socialize with friends, go camping in the wilderness, take an entire week off work (do not even think about work or be tempted to check messages).
Action Step: Choose one day a week where you completely unplug. No computers, phones, video, or games. You could watch a comedy, read a book, have a picnic – there should not really be fixed goal other than to just have a mental rest.
Mental Hack: if the stress of work/school is weighing you down, make a priority checklist. List things you must do today, within a week, within a month, and never. Right away you can temporarily forget half the list.
For Children: Set strict time limits on social media. Children are spending literally hours a day on TikTok, Snapchat and messaging apps. A two-hour limit (or less) will reduce their incidence of anxiety, depression, and obesity.
