Exercise
Regular, consistent exercise is a fantastic way to build the immune system. It does this by working the
lymphatic system – our drainage system in the body. EMA is one of the best immune enhancing exercises since it is so varied
in the movements which stimulate the flow of lymph (our immune system fluids). Try to train three times a week if possible
and on the days you do not come to class, get outside for some exercise.
Cold Showers
We have talked about this many times now. Cold showers are an amazing (albeit uncomfortable) way to
build the immune system. Start your shower warm, and every 10 seconds or so, turn the dial cooler. After you have cleaned everything, then spend an extra minute in the coldest water your can tolerate. While this may sound horrible, when the coldness takes your breath away, that is when you get the benefits – a secretion of immune building chemicals and stimulation of the nervous system. Then a vigorous scrub down with the towel to get our lymph glands flowing will start your day off right. You can also activate the lymphatic system by “shaking” in the shower. Just like a dog does, shake the water off your body by shaking each limb, bouncing up and downs and using your hands as squeegees to wipe water off your body.
Breathe
A focused breathing practice can alter your physiology. New research is coming out all the time, pioneered by the maverick Wim Hoff who has a special breathing practice called the Wim Hoff method. It is deep breathing, which anyone can do. Take a very deep breath, then passive/relaxed exhale for 20 reps. Do these twenty breaths for 2-3 rounds as often as you can…just not while driving, operating machinery or swimming.
Wash your hands
But do not use antibacterial soap. It is just not necessary, and the ingredients are hormone disruptors and harmful to the environment. Wash especially before eating. A simple soap with hot water is enough to remove 99%
of germs. When you do not have access to soap/water then hand sanitizer is the second-best option.
Cut the junk
Avoid foods which are known to compromise the immune system like sugar, vegetable oils, processed foods and artificial ingredients. Cutting out sugar alone would have a tremendous impact on your overall health. Things like chips, cheezies, chocolate, cakes, pastries, donut, muffins, and most cereals should not a daily food. It is okay to have treats but limit them to 2-3 per week.
Use a neti-pot
If you suffer from allergies, chronic nasal infections, or frequent colds, this is a must. It is just pouring saline water through your nose. The Neil Med sinus rinse squeeze bottle is the easiest to use and travel with. You can make your own solution by using sea salt with a little bit of baking soda. E.g., Once cup of sea salt and 1/8 cup of baking soda. Mix well and add a half teaspoon or so into the squeeze bottle with warm water. Do this daily during cold and flu season, and 2-3 times a day when you are sick.
